Israel's government is not likely to make a decision on the location of
two additional gas-receiving terminals before mid-2014, energy industry
sources said Tuesday. A decision was initially expected to be made this
month.
The environmental protection ministry is still reviewing
the options and is not expected to complete the process before October
at the earliest, the sources said.
In November last year,
Israel's National Planning Commission selected Emek Hefer and Hagit as
the sites for the two onshore terminals that will be linked to offshore
sites located 10 kilometers off the country's central Mediterranean
coast opposite Havazelet Hasharon and Hadera. After initial treatment,
the gas will be shipped via pipeline to the onshore terminals.
A
decision on the two gas-receiving terminals is crucial as the existing
sole pipeline and receiving terminal at Ashdod is expected to reach full
capacity in 2015. The terminals are expected to take 18 months to build
once a decision is made.Residents of the Emek Hefer region as well as environmental groups have
been protesting against the proposed location. They want the receiving
terminals to be located offshore.
Demand for gas is expected to
rise sharply in 2015 when a number of large private gas-based power
plants are expected to come online.
