NYK to Build Japan's First LNG-Fueled Tug - Maritime Executive

Posted - December 25, 2013 - Maritime Executive

NYK will build a tugboat featuring a dual fuel engine that can be powered by either LNG or heavy oil. Other than LNG carriers, this tugboat will be the first building in Japan of an LNG-fueled vessel.
NYK has enhanced its initiatives to mitigate environmental loads through the practical realization of environment-responsive technologies such as solar-powered systems and air-lubrication systems. In 2011, NYK established a team in the company’s Fuel Group to research next-generation fuel alternatives to heavy oil, and looked into building an LNG-fueled vessel with the cooperation of Nippon Kaiji Kyokai and others, based on the results of a survey conducted by the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency. LNG received attention as a possible alternative to heavy oil because LNG does not emit any SOX and produces far less CO2 and NOX compared to heavy oil. In fact, using LNG as a fuel will cut this tugboat’s emissions of CO2 by about 30 per cent, NOX by about 80 per cent, and SOX by 100 per cent compared to using heavy oil.

This project will be subsidized by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Tokyo Gas Co. will supply the LNG, and with the support of Tokyo Gas, NYK will make arrangements for a safe LNG supply system.

The NYK Group will aggressively continue to encourage initiatives to mitigate environmental loads by vessels.

Iran to find new markets by developing LNG industry

19 December 2013 Iran can find new markets in distant countries by developing its LNG industry, the managing director of National Iranian Gas Exports Company, Alireza Kameli, said on Dec. 16. "Developing the LNG industry will help Iran realize its goal of gaining 16 per cent of the world's total gas trade," Kameli said.
He went on to note that the country's oil minister has also stressed the need to boost Iran's LNG industry.

"As the world's largest holder of gas reserves, Iran can not limit itself to rely on pipeline-based exports," Kameli explained. In the fourth 5-Year National Develop Plan (2005-2009), the country aimed to produce 70 million tons of LNG from the South Pars, North Pars, Ferdosi and Golshan gas fields by launching six LNG production facilities.
Iran practically lost as much as 27 million tons of its LNG production capacity after canceling LNG project contracts with French Total, Spanish Repsol, Dutch-British Shell, and Malaysian Petronas in 2008.
Later in 2008, Iran signed $25 billion worth of contracts to develop its gas fields and produce LNG with the Chinese SINOC group, Chinese CEPA, Polish state-owned gas company (PGNiG) and Malaysian Petrofield LNG Co.
The value of Iran's contracts with PGNiG and Petrofield were respectively about $2 billion and $14-16 billion. Currently all these contracts have been suspended.
During the past few years, the LNG export amount has increased rapidly.
According to BP annual statistics published in June, about one third of the world's 1,025 bcm of total dealt gas in 2011 was LNG, amounting to 330.8 bcm, while LNG shipments grew by 10.1 percent compared to 2010.
Qatar, Iran's southern neighbor and partner in the South Pars gas field, with thanks to ExxonMobil, Total, Mitsui, Marubeni, ConocoPhillips and Shell companies has become the world's biggest LNG producer with 77 million tons (102 billion cubic meters) of LNG output annually.

4 New LNG Export Projects Approved in Canada - Maritime Executive

Posted - December 20, 2013 - Maritime Executive

Canada's National Energy Board granted liquefied natural gas export permits to four planned projects on the country's Pacific coast.

The regulator gave permits to Petronas' Pacific Northwest LNG project, along with a BG Group Plc's Prince Rupert LNG project. The WCC LNG project backed by Exxon Mobil Corp and Imperial Oil Ltd also received a 25-year license to export the fuel along with a project proposed by the privately held Woodfibre Natural Gas Ltd.
The approvals are the latest for the nascent industry, following applications from other would-be projects such as the Kitimat LNG plant planned by Chevron Corp and Apache Corp. The projects are looking to take gas from Western Canada's massive shale fields to high-paying Asian markets, though none have yet been approved by their backers.

The regulator's decision is subject to the approval of the Canadian government. Joe Oliver, Canada's natural resources minister, said in a statement the Conservative government's cabinet will now review the board approvals.

"The ... government supports energy projects that will create jobs and generate economic growth in Canada for future generations," the minister said. "Our government will only allow energy projects to proceed if they are found to be safe for Canadians after an independent, science-based environmental and regulatory review."

With the new approvals, a total of seven planned projects have been granted export licenses while three others are still under review. The board has yet to deny an application for an export permit.

First Gas for World's First Coal Seam Gas to LNG Project - Maritime Executive

Posted - December 17, 2013 -  Maritime Executive

The Queensland Curtis LNG project successfully transported the first gas from the Surat Basin coal seam gas fields onto Curtis Island, Australia, where a liquefaction terminal is located. QGC, the wholly owned Australian subsidiary of BG Group, is developing the Queensland Curtis LNG (QCLNG) Project, the world’s first project to turn coal seam gas into LNG.

Arrival of first gas onto the island enables commissioning work to begin on the first of two LNG production trains being developed by BG Group. This commissioning work is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2014.

Commenting on the milestone, BG Group chief executive Chris Finlayson said: “Delivering this key milestone demonstrates the advanced stage of development at the world’s first coal seam gas to LNG project. We are now entering the final construction and commissioning phases and we remain firmly on track to deliver first commercial LNG in the second half of 2014, as scheduled and within the US$20.4 billion budget.”

QCLNG is one of Australia’s largest capital infrastructure projects. Delivery of first gas onto the island marks the successful completion of a two-year task to lay more than 46,000 lengths of one-metre diameter steel pipe over 540 kilometres – the longest large-diameter buried pipeline in Australia. The site on Curtis Island can accommodate an expansion to 12 million tonnes of LNG a year, subject to demand.
