CALGARY – A company headed by an Indonesian billionaire has applied
to Canadian regulators to export liquefied natural gas from a former
pulp mill north of downtown Vancouver, in British Columbia’s Lower
Mainland.
Woodfibre LNG Export Pte. Ltd. is seeking permission from Canada’s
National Energy Board to export 2.1 million tonnes of liquid fuel per
year, about 280 million cubic feet a day, for 25 years from a 212-acre
site located at the head of Howe Sound southwest of Squamish, B.C. First
shipments are targeted between 2017 and 2021, pending regulatory
approvals and a final investment decision, the company said.
The proposal is tiny compared to the much larger export applications
filed by ExxonMobil Corp., the U.K.’s BG Group Plc and Malaysia’s
Petronas. It joins small-scale LNG schemes proposed by Houston-based LNG
Partners LLC and by AltaGas Ltd. and Japan’s Idemitsu Kosan Co. Ltd. in
seeking to export Canadian gas to Asian markets.
